November 2011: SELF’s 2010 Annual Report! Plus, a new video and our latest news…

October and November were busy months for SELF. We continued to raise our visibility globally by participating in prominent international energy conferences, garnering media attention, and winning a prestigious award for our work in Benin. In addition, we are pleased to announce the publication of our 2010 Annual Report.

These successes could not have been achieved without supporters like you. Thanks to your generosity, SELF’s solar electric systems are improving the livelihoods of children and adults in Benin, Haiti, Kenya, Lesotho, and Rwanda.

Out of Africa

In October, Bob traveled to Oslo, Norway to participate in “Energy for All: Financing Access for the Poor”, a high-level conference hosted by the Norwegian government and the International Energy Agency (IEA), where he presented the success of our Solar Market Gardens™ (SMG) in enhancing food security for the communities of Bessassi and Dunkassa in Benin, West Africa. In a very exciting development, Madame Ganigui Guera, President of the Dunkassa Women’s Farming Collective, was able to accompany Bob to the conference. Traveling out of her homeland for the first time, she spoke at the conference about the transformative power the Solar Market Gardens have had on the villages. The video of her speech is below. You can also read more about her adventurous trip – which included meeting U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon – in Bob’s blog.

November Success

In November we participated in two important conferences – the inaugural Global Solar Forum in Évora, Portugal and the 2nd Symposium on Energy Poverty in Vienna, Austria.

SELF joined Sun Aid and IDEAAS (Institute for the Development of Natural Energy and Sustainability) to co-host the Global Solar Forum, designed to bring together a group of diverse solar energy industry leaders to discuss and identify ways to eliminate poverty through the implementation of integrated solar technology solutions.

The 2nd Symposium on Energy Poverty, co-hosted by the International Energy Forum (IEF) and the OPEC Fund for Internationl Development (OFID), focused on the issue of energy poverty and its solutions. At the symposium, Bob moderated the session “Multifaceted cooperation to finance energy access for the poor; what are the most sustainable mechanisms?” The panel focused on how to finance alternative energy development projects, shift from fuel to renewable energy solutions, and facilitate public-private partnerships.

On the heels of the symposium, we were pleasantly surprised to be awarded the London-based Energy Institute’s (EI) Community Initiative Award for our Solar Market Gardens™ (SMG) in Benin. The EI Awards recognize innovation and excellence among individuals and organizations working in the global energy sector. We’re honored to receive this award and thank the Energy Institute for recognizing our work.

Such high profile events greatly complement our projects, and will help us further spread the word about SELF in 2012.
