Energy Access as a Foundation for Development
Across the world, millions of people still live without reliable electricity. In rural and underserved communities, this absence of energy limits nearly every aspect of life, from education and healthcare to agriculture and income generation. SELF’s work is grounded in the belief that energy access is foundational to human development, and that clean energy solutions must be designed with communities rather than simply delivered to them.
Community-based solar farms and gardens align directly with this philosophy. By sharing the benefits of a single solar installation across many households, schools, clinics, or cooperatives, these models ensure that clean energy reaches those who need it most regardless of income, land ownership, or geographic isolation. According to IRENA, least-developed countries received just 1.15 percent of global renewable energy investment between 2015 and 2022. Community-scale solar is one of the most direct ways to close that gap.
Community-Based Solar Farms: Powering Collective Progress
Community-based solar farms are centralized solar installations that serve multiple users at once. For SELF, these systems are not simply infrastructure projects. They are community assets designed to serve long-term local needs.
Traditional energy systems often exclude low-income and rural populations due to high costs, weak grid infrastructure, or lack of political priority. Community-based solar farms offer a different path by delivering shared power to multiple users within the same local area. A single installation can supply reliable electricity for farm operations, irrigation systems, produce storage, and nearby homes, reducing the need for individual rooftop systems or large upfront capital. That same shared power can extend to essential nearby services such as schools and clinics, multiplying the benefit of each installation well beyond the original site.
When communities help plan and manage these systems, they become valued local assets that support livelihoods and build resilience over time.
Solar Gardens: Where Energy Meets Livelihoods
Solar gardens take the idea of shared solar a step further by directly connecting clean energy with food security, income generation, and community well-being.
SELF’s Solar Market Garden Model
One of SELF’s most impactful programs, the Solar Market Garden (SMG), demonstrates how solar energy can transform lives when applied through a genuine development lens. In many rural regions, especially across Africa, communities depend on agriculture but face severe challenges including unreliable rainfall, long dry seasons, limited access to irrigation technology, and heavy physical labor that disproportionately falls on women.
SELF’s solar gardens address these challenges in an integrated way. Solar panels power water pumps that draw water from underground aquifers into elevated reservoirs. That water is then gravity-fed through drip irrigation lines directly to crops. Women’s farming cooperatives manage the gardens collectively, making daily decisions about planting, harvesting, and selling their produce.
The results are substantial. Year-round food production replaces seasonal uncertainty. Families gain consistent access to nutritious vegetables. Surplus produce is sold in local markets, creating reliable household income. As Madeline Yorou, a participant in SELF’s Solar Market Garden program in Benin, shared: before the garden, she farmed without irrigation. With solar-powered water access, she has earned meaningful income and described the transformation simply as being happy. Women gain economic independence and step into community leadership roles. The SMG program was recognized with the Momentum for Change Lighthouse Award from the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change at COP21 in Paris, and a Stanford University study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences documented striking improvements in food production among participating communities.
These solar gardens are not energy projects in isolation. They are tools for poverty reduction, gender equity, and climate adaptation working together.
Community Ownership and Dignity
A core principle of SELF’s work is that development must be community-driven. Community-based solar farms and gardens succeed because they respect local knowledge, leadership, and priorities rather than imposing external solutions.
SELF works with local partners and community groups to ensure the communities we serve are at the center of every decision. We train residents to operate and maintain their own systems and make certain that community priorities drive the direction of each project. This approach builds dignity alongside infrastructure. When people understand, manage, and genuinely benefit from their energy systems, those systems prove far more resilient and impactful over the long term.
Strengthening Health, Education, and Water Access
Solar Market Gardens are a powerful catalyst for rural development, but they represent only one dimension of what shared clean energy can accomplish. Reliable electricity improves nearly every aspect of human welfare.
In healthcare, solar power enables vaccine refrigeration, safe nighttime medical care, and the operation of essential medical equipment. Clinics can function consistently even in remote areas where grid power is unreliable or nonexistent. In Benin, SELF partnered with the Millennium Challenge Corporation to install a network of solar-powered water pumps that now provide clean water to approximately 40,000 people, reducing waterborne illness and improving daily life across the region.
In education, solar-powered schools can extend study hours with reliable lighting, run computers and internet tools, and create safe environments for students and teachers. According to the United Nations, the majority of primary schools in low-income countries lack electricity, making solar electrification a prerequisite for quality education rather than an add-on.
In water access, solar-powered pumping systems stop waterborne disease, improve sanitation and hygiene, and reduce the burden placed on women and children who would otherwise collect water on foot. UNICEF estimates that women and girls globally spend approximately 200 million hours each day collecting water. Solar infrastructure gives that time back and redirects it toward school, income, and community participation. Today, 43 percent of the global population lacks adequate access to sanitation services, a gap that solar-powered water infrastructure is uniquely positioned to help close.
Climate Justice and Resilience
Climate change disproportionately affects the same communities that face the deepest energy poverty. While low-income countries have contributed little to global greenhouse gas emissions, they often suffer the greatest consequences of climate change. SELF views community-owned, off-grid solar energy as a climate justice solution because it expands access to clean power while strengthening communities’ ability to adapt.
By reducing dependence on fossil fuels and supporting essential services, these systems help vulnerable populations build resilience that lasts. In regions vulnerable to droughts, floods, or extreme heat, solar-powered systems help communities remain productive and secure despite worsening environmental conditions. SELF’s solar training programs further reinforce this resilience by equipping local technicians with the skills to install and maintain clean energy infrastructure independently, bolstering local economies and fostering a more equitable energy transition from the ground up.
Why Shared Clean Energy Is the Future
From SELF’s perspective, the future of clean energy must be inclusive rather than exclusive, community-owned rather than centralized, and integrated with development rather than isolated from it. Solar farms and gardens embody this future. They demonstrate that renewable energy can simultaneously drive economic empowerment, food security, gender equality, health and education access, and climate resilience.
