In 1995, SELF worked with the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) to provide 500 Solar Home Systems (SHS) to rural farmers and herdsmen in Gansu Province. This project expanded upon the Chinese State Science and Technology Commission and the U.S. Department of Energy’s rural electrification initiative in Gansu and other rural provinces in China in 1993.
