Powering the Goals: Solar Energy and Marine Ecosystems

Sixty percent of the world’s marine ecosystems now experience instability. A 1.1°C  increase in global temperatures is causing widespread changes to our oceans that may be irreversible if we don’t urgently cut our greenhouse gas emissions.

Sustainable Development Goal 14—”life below water”—aims to ensure a brighter fate for our oceans. Crucial to this future is renewable energy. Renewables like solar energy counter the rise in global temperatures, helping our marine ecosystems thrive again.

An Overview of Goal 14

Sustainable Development Goal 14 strives to “conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources.” Our oceans carry the life of our planet, but today, they’re being pushed to their ecological limits. 

  • Oceans are now 30% more acidic than 250 years ago. 
  • 17 million tons of plastic entered the oceans in 2021. 
  • In 2019, 35.4% of global fish stocks were overfished—a number that grows slowly every year. 
  • 113 million people depend on small-scale fisheries for employment. 90% of global fisheries are small-scale or artisanal. 
  • 40% of the ocean is heavily affected by pollution, depleted fisheries, or loss of habitat.

Nearly every inch of the ocean is impacted by human activity. And human activity depends on a healthy ocean. Three billion people rely on marine and coastal biodiversity for their livelihoods. Without action, our oceans and the lives tied to it are in jeopardy.

4 Ways Solar Energy Protects Marine Ecosystems 

  • Stopping ocean acidification. Oceans absorb one-third of all carbon emissions. As concentrations rise, our waters are becoming more acidic, impacting the calcium-based structures of corals and mollusks. This damages the food chain and weakens fisheries. Solar energy eliminates ocean acidity by replacing polluting fossil fuels.
  • Halting sea-level rise. Over the past 140 years, seas have risen by 9 inches. As climate change intensifies, coastal habitats like mangroves and marshes will become submerged, affecting food chains and entire ecosystems. Renewables fight sea-level rise by halting increases in global temperatures.
  • Mitigating pollution. Ships cause noise and water pollution, and generate 2.5% of global greenhouse emissions. Today, 80% of ships use diesel-electric transmission systems, saving fuel quietly. One day, ships may be fully electric and powered by clean solar energy, cutting emissions altogether.
  • Supporting small-scale fishers. Many fishers live in remote areas. Off-grid solutions provide a source of power, allowing them to communicate, navigate, and illuminate their surroundings. Solar-powered refrigerators keep fish chilled, reducing waste and improving income. Energy also boosts the resilience of fishing communities, keeping them safe during emergencies. 

Innovations in Solar Technology for Ocean Conservation

The oceans are vast, but the tools needed to protect them are becoming smarter and more efficient. New solar-powered technologies are helping researchers, communities, and conservationists understand and safeguard marine life. Solar-powered ocean buoys can now monitor water temperature, pH levels, and pollution in real time. This data is crucial for tracking acidification and predicting coral bleaching events before they spread.

In fragile coastal regions, solar desalination systems provide clean drinking water without burning fossil fuels or harming marine habitats. Floating solar farms—installed on reservoirs or calm coastal zones—generate clean power while reducing evaporation and preserving freshwater supplies. Even in deep-sea research, solar-powered drones and autonomous vehicles help scientists map ecosystems silently, minimizing disturbance to wildlife. These innovations prove that clean energy and healthy oceans can advance hand in hand.

Shining a Light on Fishing Communities

Up in the sun-drenched Lagonoy Gulf, children play among the docks while fishers sail through the tides to catch Tuna. Families depend on fisheries to support their livelihoods in this Filipino gulf—yet hidden challenges arise.

Fishers spend time and income traveling to neighboring villages to fuel their vessels. Kerosene lamps risk setting boats on fire while at sea. The lack of basic resources makes it difficult to ensure economic prosperity.

That’s where the World Wildlife Fund stepped in. As part of its Sustainable Tuna Partnership project, the organization introduced solar innovations to two communities of Lagonoy Gulf in 2017. At the Dolo Port in San Jose, residents received an off-grid solar system with battery storage. In Sagñay, locals were gifted with solar-powered lamps and charging stations for their boats.

For fishers, these installments encourage prosperity. They charge the battery on their boats rather than fuel their tanks. They no longer fear the risk of fire in the middle of the night, thanks to electric lamps. And with greater productivity, they are able to spend more time with their families.

The Lagonoy Gulf project illustrates the transformative impact solar energy brings to fishing communities around the world. When we switch off fossil fuels, we switch on possibilities. And for some, this surely means more (sustainably caught) Tuna.

Community-Led Marine Conservation Through Solar Energy

Marine conservation succeeds when coastal communities thrive. Around the world, solar-powered systems are helping fishing villages strengthen their economies while easing pressure on the ocean. Solar microgrids enable coastal households to run refrigeration, water purification, and small businesses—reducing the need to rely on harmful or unsustainable marine practices.

In many small-island developing states (SIDS), solar energy powers early-warning systems for storms, tidal surges, and cyclones—helping fishers and families stay safe. Solar-powered cold storage hubs allow fishers to store their catch for longer periods, reducing spoilage and preventing overfishing. Women’s cooperatives use solar dryers to preserve seaweed and seafood sustainably, adding value without straining marine resources.

When communities have reliable solar energy, they gain freedom, safety, and opportunity—all essential elements for long-term stewardship of the ocean.

Looking Forward: Solar Energy and Marine Ecosystems

Oceans cover 70% of all the planet and determine the future of human existence. It’s up to us to shine a light on their plight and help conserve them. From recycling plastics to consuming sustainable seafood, every bit helps reach Goal 14.

Using renewable energy might be the biggest ‘bit’ of all. When we eliminate carbon emissions, we eliminate some of the greatest threats to our seas. What better way to protect marine ecosystems around the world?
