Micro-Enterprise Centers
The Micro-Enterprise Center (MEC) is an electrified vending space where entrepreneurs can set up shop and sell their goods and services.
In energy-poor communities, growing a business is exceedingly challenging. Without electricity, entrepreneurs can’t light their shops, utilize electric appliances, or do research. SELF’s MEC model equips entrepreneurs with the electricity to grow their business and pursue their dreams.
How it Works
Each MEC consists of roughly a dozen stalls. Each stall is rented out to a tenant for an affordable fee, which funds the ongoing maintenance of the facility.
Tenants utilize their stalls in diverse ways. With electricity, cooks can prepare meals and refrigerate drinks; seamstresses can sow more clothes with electric machines; technicians can sell phones and repair radios.
The Impact
Entrepreneurs can improve and expand their offerings, earning more money to support themselves and their families. Businesses grow and can begin to hire additional people, further fueling the local economy.
Customers also benefit by having a centralized business hub with improved access to local goods and services.
