Solar Electric Light Fund to Co-host Inaugural Global Solar Forum

Washington, D.C. – November 9 – The Solar Electric Light Fund (SELF), a Washington, D.C. based nonprofit working to eliminate energy poverty through the use of solar power, today announced that it is joining Sun Aid and IDEAAS (Institute for the Development of Natural Energy and Sustainability) to co-host the Global Solar Forum taking place in Évora, Portugal from November 10-12. The forum is designed to bring together a group of diverse solar energy industry leaders to discuss and identify ways to eliminate poverty through the implementation of integrated solar technology solutions. To achieve these goals, a primary focus of the conference will be the formation and creation of the Global Solar Academy, whose mission will be to serve as a platform for connecting industry stakeholders, sharing knowledge and best practices, developing markets, and advocating for the rapid adoption of solar energy in developing countries.

Robert Freling, SELF’s executive director, who will be addressing the conference states, “The energy poverty solutions equation is complex. It requires a diverse set of industry players that can contribute their unique experience and knowledge in a collaborative way to overcome the many challenges it presents.”

Attendees of the forum representing government, academia, non-governmental organizations, financial institutions, international development agencies, and the private sector will be making a formal commitment to collaborate through the Global Solar Academy to identify ways to provide energy access to those living in poverty.

In addition to Freling, forum speakers will also include Manuel Collares Pereira, president of Sun Aid; Fábio Rosa, founder of IDEAAS; José Ernesto d’Oliveira, mayor of Évora; and Carlos Braumann from the Universidade de Évora Rector.
