By deploying people-centered, community-scale solar solutions, SELF works alongside communities to build long-term resilience, improve livelihoods, and expand access to essential services. Through initiatives such as community solar systems, Solar Market Gardens, and solar-powered water solutions, SELF is helping communities move beyond energy poverty toward a more equitable and sustainable future.
Understanding Energy Poverty and Why Solar Matters
Traditional energy systems often exclude rural and low-income populations due to high infrastructure costs, weak grid coverage, and lack of political priority. Extending centralized grids into remote areas can take decades, leaving communities without reliable power for schools, clinics, farms, and small businesses in the meantime.
Solar energy offers a different path. Decentralized, renewable, and adaptable, solar systems can be deployed where the grid cannot reach. More importantly, when designed with community ownership and local participation, solar solutions empower people to take control of their energy future rather than remain dependent on unreliable external systems.
From an NGO perspective, the value of community-scale solar lies in its ability to deliver shared benefits, powering multiple services at once while strengthening social cohesion and economic opportunity across an entire community rather than serving one household at a time.
Community-Scale Solar: A People-Centered Approach
Community-scale solar systems differ from individual rooftop installations in one key way: They are designed to serve shared needs. Instead of powering a single household or facility, one solar system can support schools, health clinics, water infrastructure, and local enterprises simultaneously.
This approach reduces costs, lowers barriers to access, and maximizes impact. Communities do not need individual rooftop systems or large upfront investments. Instead, they collectively benefit from clean, reliable energy that supports daily life and long-term development. SELF’s Whole Village Development Model is built on precisely this principle. Founded in 2000 under Executive Director Bob Freling, the model has guided SELF’s work across more than 25 countries, ensuring that solar installations deliver maximum good.
Local participation is equally essential to this approach. When communities are involved in planning, management, and maintenance, solar infrastructure becomes a valued local asset rather than an external intervention. SELF prioritizes training local stakeholders to operate and maintain their own systems, ensuring community priorities guide decision-making and building the technical capacity that keeps projects running effectively for decades.
Solar Gardens: Where Energy Meets Livelihoods
Solar gardens take the concept of shared solar a step further by directly linking clean energy to food security and income generation. These systems integrate solar power with agricultural and water solutions, enabling communities to grow food consistently, supply local markets, and improve household nutrition year-round.
In many rural regions, agriculture is the foundation of livelihoods, yet farmers face increasing challenges from climate change, water scarcity, and rising fuel costs. Solar-powered water systems offer a sustainable alternative to diesel pumps and manual irrigation, helping farmers adapt to changing conditions while reducing their environmental footprint.
SELF’s Solar Market Garden program brings this vision to life. By combining solar-powered water pumping with gravity-fed drip irrigation, the program enables women’s farming cooperatives to grow crops throughout the year, including during dry seasons when rain-fed agriculture fails entirely.
The impact is well documented: a Stanford University study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences found striking improvements in food production among participating communities, and the program received the UNFCCC Momentum for Change Lighthouse Award at COP21 in Paris for its innovative approach to climate adaptation. As one Solar Market Garden participant in Benin, Madeline Yorou, testified: “Before, we gardened without irrigation, but now we have water. The irrigation gives the garden plenty of water, and we’re happy now. Because of the garden, we’ve earned money.”
A solar-powered water pump for pond irrigation can similarly provide consistent water access for crops, livestock, or aquaculture without ongoing fuel expenses, while a solar garden water pump can support small-scale farming plots, community gardens, and food production areas, improving yields while conserving resources. By integrating energy, water, and agriculture into a single system, solar gardens multiply the benefits of clean energy far beyond electricity alone.
Solar Water Solutions and Climate Resilience
As climate change intensifies droughts, floods, and unpredictable rainfall, water management has become one of the most pressing challenges facing rural communities worldwide. Solar-powered water systems play a critical role in building climate resilience while protecting natural resources.
In Benin, SELF partnered with the Millennium Challenge Corporation to install a network of solar-powered water pumps that now provide clean water to approximately 40,000 people, stopping waterborne illness and improving health across the region.
In Kenya, SELF is working with the Maasai people to install solar-powered water access, far beyond the grid. The new systems will deliver clean drinking water for humans, livestock, and a local rhino sanctuary.
Across countries and continents, clean water is changing lives. And by drawing on solar power, communities can access it reliably and sustainably, regardless of rain patterns or pre-existing infrastructure.
Economic Stability and Local Development
Reliable energy and water access unlock economic opportunities. When communities can grow food consistently and manage water efficiently, they can sell more crops, expand into new markets, and develop their enterprise.
The economic benefits of clean energy go beyond agriculture as well. Solar solutions help households reduce fuel costs, stabilize income, and redirect savings toward education, healthcare, and new technologies. Over time, this economic stability strengthens entire communities, supporting job creation across local supply chains and encouraging broader investment in shared infrastructure. SELF’s Micro-Enterprise Centers in Benin illustrate this dynamic directly, offering rural entrepreneurs a solar-powered space to operate businesses, grow their income, and bring new services to their neighbors.
By focusing on shared systems rather than individual ownership alone, SELF’s approach ensures that economic benefits are distributed more equitably, reaching the households and groups that are most often left behind by conventional development models.
A Holistic Vision for Ending Energy Poverty
Energy poverty is not a single-sector problem, and it cannot be solved with one-size-fits-all solutions. SELF’s work across more than 25 countries demonstrates that when clean energy is integrated thoughtfully with water, food systems, education, and healthcare, it becomes a catalyst for transformative and lasting change.
Solar energy, when paired with community ownership and long-term capacity building, does more than power lights or pumps. It strengthens resilience, introduces opportunity, and creates concrete pathways to sustainable development. IRENA has documented that least-developed countries received just 1.15 percent of global renewable energy investment between 2015 and 2022, making community-centered organizations like SELF essential to ensuring that the clean energy transition reaches those who need it most.
